FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything most people ask before and after setting up JK BMS Remote. pricing page.
Getting Started
What do I need to get started with JK BMS Remote?
A JK BMS Remote-compatible ESP32 gateway — bring your own ESP32 dev board, we don’t sell hardware — a JK-BMS battery pack running BMS software version 6.0 or newer, and a WiFi network. No server, no Home Assistant, no networking setup — the gateway talks to the cloud directly.
Do I need any technical or networking experience?
No. You flash the firmware from your browser, connect the gateway to WiFi, claim it to your account, and you're monitoring live telemetry. The guided setup walks through every step.
How long does setup take?
Most people are up and running in under 10 minutes, from a blank ESP32 board to live data on the dashboard.
Hardware
What gateway hardware do I need, and where do I get it?
JK BMS Remote runs on a standard ESP32 development board. We do not sell hardware — bring your own board (any ESP32 DevKit-class board works) and flash it yourself with the browser-based flasher. JKBMSR is a software project, not a hardware vendor.
Is wiring the gateway to my BMS safe?
Yes, when you follow the wiring guide for your setup. The connection is read-only to your BMS's existing UART or Bluetooth interface — no high-voltage wiring or modification to your battery system is involved.
Compatibility
Which BMS brands does JK BMS Remote support?
JK-BMS only, over Bluetooth or a wired UART connection. That is a deliberate scope choice, not a roadmap gap — JKBMSR is a focused JK-BMS project rather than a multi-vendor integration layer. The protocol is identical across the whole JK-BMS family, so there is no per-model guesswork: any model running BMS software version 6.0 or newer is supported. See the compatibility page for exactly which models we have verified ourselves.
What if my exact BMS model isn't listed?
Many unlisted models still work if they share the same underlying protocol as a listed one — check the compatibility page for the specifics, or contact us and we'll help you figure it out.
Pricing & Billing
Do I have to pay to use my gateway?
No. The free Cloud Service tier is permanent — your gateway is never locked out, deleted, or cut off for not paying, and there's no one-time license or per-device fee. Optional paid tiers only change how often your gateway relays fresh telemetry, from every 1 hour on the free tier down to every 30 seconds.
What does a paid Cloud Service tier actually pay for?
A faster update interval — how often your gateway relays fresh telemetry, from every 1 hour on the free tier down to every 30 seconds on the fastest paid tier. Every tier, including free, already includes always-on monitoring, instant phone alerts, history you can look back on, dashboard access from anywhere, and automatic software updates — plus the ongoing work of maintaining and improving JK BMS Remote itself.
What happens if I stop paying for a Cloud Service tier?
Nothing is deleted, and relay never stops — it falls back to the free tier's 1-hour update interval instead of your faster paid one. Your license stays valid, your gateway stays claimed, and your history is preserved exactly as it was. Resubscribe anytime to go faster again.
Is there a discount for multiple gateways?
Cloud Service is priced per gateway, and every gateway you claim uses the same plan — there's no separate volume tier, and we don't sell bundles. If cost is a problem, ask below: fee waivers and free access are granted where they're needed.
Can I get free access or a discount if I can't afford it right now?
The Cloud Service fees exist purely to keep the servers running — not to turn a profit. If you'd like extended free access or a discount code, reach out through the Contact page. Requests are read and answered personally, and reasonable requests are generally granted.
Data & Privacy
Where is my data stored?
In encrypted cloud infrastructure that we operate and maintain — you never have to run or maintain a server yourself.
Who can see my battery data?
Only you, by default. You can optionally grant other people view-only access to a specific gateway from that gateway's Sharing settings, and revoke it at any time.
Can I delete my account and data?
Yes, from your account settings, at any time.
Mobile App
Is there a mobile app?
Yes — two apps for Android (with iOS support planned): the JKBMSR Pro app for cloud monitoring of your gateways, and the JKBMSR BLE app for direct on-device BMS telemetry. See the downloads page for the latest releases.
How do I get alerts on my phone?
Install the app and sign in with your JK BMS Remote account — once you've set alert thresholds on a gateway from the dashboard, matching alerts are pushed straight to your phone automatically.
Reliability
What happens to my battery if my WiFi goes down?
Nothing changes for your battery. Your BMS keeps operating and protecting your pack entirely on its own, independent of JK BMS Remote — only remote monitoring pauses until WiFi comes back, and the gateway reconnects automatically.
What if JK BMS Remote's cloud has an outage?
Same principle: your BMS's own safety protections never depend on our cloud being up. Check the public status page for real-time uptime and incident history.
Can JK BMS Remote change settings on my BMS, or is it just read-only?
Read-only, always. The gateway firmware only listens to the telemetry your BMS already broadcasts over its existing Bluetooth or UART connection — it never sends configuration, control, or write commands, and it cannot change your charge/discharge parameters, protection thresholds, or balancing settings. See the Terms of Service for the full disclaimer and limitation of liability.
